At just before 21:00hrs on Saturday night Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Ashburton were called out to search for a man in his 40s who was lost, possibly injured, somewhere north of Haytor.
He had been on a dog walk late on Saturday afternoon with his family. As darkness fell and the fog rolled in, he became separated from his group and was unable to find either them or his way back to the carpark. His sister, concerned for his safety, raised the alarm.
Almost 20 volunteers from the rescue team and the National Police Air Service helicopter were deployed in the search for the individual. At around 22:00hrs shouts were heard near the Becka Brook, which is halfway between Haytor and Houndtor. By 22:30hrs the individual was located and apart from being cold and wet was found to be uninjured. He was then returned to the roadhead by one of the rescue team’s 4x4 vehicles.
The Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton Search Manager said ‘We were concerned that the individual may have been injured and were very relieved to find him safe and well. As ever, we are indebted to our volunteers who gave up their Saturday evening with friends and family to take part in the search.’
