Child Trapped on Hound Tor

Callout 🚨
23/06/2026

On Tuesday afternoon we were called following the report of a child trapped in rocks on Dartmoor. 🪨 ⛰️

A ten-year old child had slipped whilst moving down between rocks and was pinned under one of the main blocks on Hound Tor.
Her leg was trapped 🦵 but she was uninjured. Her group leaders had done everything possible to try and free her.

Using our specialist kit, we were able to move her a few inches, but it was not enough to extricate her, so we called on the services of one of our sister teams, Devon Cave Rescue. ⛑️

With their additional expertise and the combined efforts of our teams, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, HART, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and Devon Air Ambulance – we used washing-up liquid 🫧 and lubricants to release her leg. We were able to free the child, who had remained in good spirits throughout, and now she had a real adventure to tell her school mates about! 😊
She had been trapped for around four hours but was well enough to walk away after further assessment.

This was a fantastic piece of multiagency work and a real testament to the skills and professionalism of the volunteers and statutory agencies involved.
