Specialist teams
Within the team we have specialist teams that have an expertise in an aspect of search and rescue beyond that of normal members. This involves more commitment on a members time as they train beyond the normal Wednesday nights frequently at weekends, to maintain their skills to the higher standards required in the specialism.
Our specialist teams currently are:
- Hasty Team – Members who, amongst other skills,  have an interest in running and a fitness to match, and are deployed by search managers to search possible routes a missing person may have taken travelling very light and hence rapidly.
- Medical Team – Members who have extended their knowledge beyond first aid and into a higher assessed level of casualty care where they could be called on to give higher levels of care including injections for example. Various health professionals are key members in this team helping to raise the standard of casualty care across all members.
- Swift Water Rescue – All team members are required to be Swift Water Technicians to the Level 2 standard. The water team go beyond this and have to be Level 3 qualified Swift Water Technicians. This skill and knowledge is frequently brought into action when searching in terrain such as the Dart Gorge and assisting in flood evacuations.
- Navigation Team – Members have a high degree of skill, knowledge and experience in the art of micro navigation at any time of day or night in any weathers. Again as per the other teams, they help to raise the level of navigation skills across the team as a whole.
- Rope Team – The rope team has a particular passion and skill in the art of rescue on steep ground where rope systems and potential stretcher hauls have to be rigged safely, quickly and frequently in difficult conditions.
All the above teams in-part their specialist knowledge to the rest of the team members as part of the normal Wednesday night meets, to help maintain all member’s skills to a high level.
